I’m hoping to make people cackle a bit

Lark is a ceramicist based in Portland, Maine, working out of Handful Studios. She starts with wheel-thrown pieces and uses sgraffito and other surface design techniques to carve plants and animals into the pot before it gets fired. Sometimes delicate, sometimes whimsical, and often humorous — her images draw from the ocean and the landscapes around her.

“Many of my best ideas come to me right before I fall asleep, and I've learned to accept those suggestions and create them no matter how strange.” This unfiltered approach often leads to her most memorable pieces, although pieces occasionally end up with an odd twist!

Lark also has a 2D art practice in oil and egg tempera paints as well as a custom illustration business called Seabird Studio.

Lark’s partner, Julian, owns Handful Studios, where he teaches throwing classes and makes work. The larger pieces you see on the website or at markets are collaborations – thrown by Julian, decorated by Lark. These pieces are denoted by the L+J markers mark.
